What Will You Do?

Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer will work with a robust engineering team to design and develop complex mechanical and electrical plans to produce refrigeration systems for commercial and industrial markets.  This engineering position will be located at our Dyersville, IA facility and will assist developing refrigeration schematics, to include sizing, and selecting components which make up a complete refrigeration system. In addition, this engineer will receive training on how to compile bill of materials, design the layout of equipment, perform essential calculations to determine required performance, review and interpret customer plans and specifications, and interface with sales, service, production, and outside customers. Engineers must be able to provide technical support and troubleshooting for our onsite production team and as well as display a hands-on approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform the design of refrigeration systems for commercial and industrial environments including chilled water, halocarbon-based systems, Co2, and industrial ammonia refrigeration facilities
  • Ability to select, schedule, size and specify system components to include air distribution, air handling, refrigeration, piping, heat exchangers, pumps, piping, and accessories
  • Perform heat load calculations to determine facility refrigeration requirements and heat transfer and thermodynamic analysis associated with sizing and selection of refrigeration equipment, piping, and control valves
  • Review refrigeration components during manufacturing process and recommend design modifications as necessary
  • Design products and systems to meet requirements of quality, cost effectiveness, energy efficiency, customer requirements, company standards and other predetermined competitive factors
  • Work to meet design schedules and complete tasks on budgets
  • Proactively assist customers in the following:
    • Project conceptualization involving diagnosis of systems and design option analysis
    • Contract document preparation
    • Cost estimating, specification writing, shop drawing review, construction coordination and budget monitoring.
  • Interface and communicate with external and internal customers including engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and sales/marketing personnel
  • Create new and/or revise preliminary design from objects, rough sketches or verbal or written instructions from engineers
  • Construct and maintain SolidWorks models of parts and design templates to support engineering and production
  • Revise current drawings per Engineering Change Order (ECO) specifications, changing views and dimensions as necessary to keep drawings in balance
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of SolidWorks computer aided design system functions and capabilities
  • Discuss specifications with engineers and makes production line observations as necessary to complete work assignments
  • Work with internal team on system designs and concepts
  • Utilize Zero Zone’s standard drafting procedures to provide design consistency throughout engineering and production


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • HVAC/Refrigeration experience is a plus but not required
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD is required, experience with SolidWorks is desired
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of ERP systems is helpful
  • Experience with Microsoft Office required
  • A high electro-mechanical aptitude and knowledge is preferred


  • Heat and mass transfer and fluid dynamics knowledge is desired.
  • Great project management, ability to plan and organize, set priorities, and manage multiple projects
  • A strong propensity for being hands-on and work closely with factory production personnel.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Effectively communicate with coworkers on projects
