Product Overview
Why CO2?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) was used as a refrigerant as early as the 1860’s, often found aboard oceangoing ships to preserve their catch; its use declined with the advent of synthetic refrigerants. Today, CO2 re-emerges as a future-proof option for refrigeration. Regulations move the industry away from ozone-depleting and global-warming synthetic refrigerants to preserve our planet, meaning now is the right time to return to the beginning of refrigeration with Zero Zone Genesys™ CO2 Systems.
CO2 is an environmentally exceptional refrigerant with its ozone depletion potential (ODP) rating of 0 and a global warming potential (GWP) rating of 1. This makes CO2 up to 4,000 times less impactful on global warming than HFC refrigerants. CO2 is nonflammable and nontoxic, and it is a low-cost refrigerant. The recent advent of high-pressure, iron-impregnated copper has allowed the traditionally stainless-steel piping to transition to familiar brazed copper piping, further improving value and simplifying repairs. CO2 is a smart choice environmentally and economically.
“I wanted the best product in here for the long run, not only economically but also environmentally. One leak in the old (HFC) system would cost you $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, where if there’s a leak in this, it’s very little. CO2 seemed like a no-brainer.”
– Director of Buildings for School District
Right for Retail
With an ASHRAE safety classification of A1 (nontoxic, nonflammable), CO2 is a perfect match for supermarkets and grocery stores. Upcoming EPA regulations will end the use of most HFC refrigerants by 2025, which means today is the day to make CO2 the refrigerant for your next store. Zero Zone provides systems that fit inside a store’s mechanical room or outdoor equipment to save valuable indoor space. Choosing a Genesys™ transcritical CO2 system allows a store to utilize a single refrigerant across the entire facility, in both its mechanical space and the retail space.
Right for Industrial
CO2 is an effective refrigerant for industrial applications, either serving as the sole refrigerant in a CO2 transcritical system or as a secondary refrigerant in a cascade system. Zero Zone has been successful serving customers with cold storage warehouses, food processing facilities, chiller applications (including ice arenas), and medical/pharmaceutical plants. CO2 has a high cooling capacity, meaning smaller compressors and smaller line sizes, and it has a high density, leading to increased coil efficiency.
